The range of courses offered by the Faculty of Humanities is very diverse. You can choose between Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, in which you can also integrate periods of study abroad, and many subjects can be studied as part of a teacher training programme. Typical of the courses offered by the faculty are multi-subject Bachelor's programmes, in which you combine different subjects according to your interests to create an individual study programme.

We have sorted our study programmes by subject to give you some orientation. If you have any questions, please contact the University's Central Student Advisory Service or the individual subject advisors.

Historical heritage

If that's not a locational advantage: In Bamberg you can not only study the historical heritage of mankind, you can live in it. Vibrant historical and geographical sciences are closely linked to a multifaceted European Ethnology. Thus, from Bamberg you can travel through all times and cultures, researching and asking questions. Finally, the Interdisciplinary Medieval Studies combine the methods of various cultural studies subjects into a practice-oriented, future-oriented degree programme.

Language · Literature · Culture & Communication

No one in Bamberg suffers from a Babylonian confusion of languages. For despite all the diversity, the degree programmes in linguistics and literary studies follow a common concept: a cultural studies orientation of the individual subjects is characteristic for all philologies, whereby overarching connections are brought into view. The new interdisciplinary and bilingual elite Master's programme in Cultural Studies of the Near East in cooperation with the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is an example of this.

    Cultural heritage

In Bamberg, the world heritage is within reach. There is therefore a unique opportunity in many degree programmes to discover, explore and care for it. But Bamberg is not the only good field of activity for our students of art history, archaeology or monument conservation - they are at work all over the world researching and safeguarding the cultural heritage of mankind. At the Institute for Archaeology, Monument Studies and Art History, the corresponding subjects are bundled - and in a combination that is unprecedented in Germany. The new Master's programme Digital Monument Technologies familiarises students with the latest digital tools.

    Philosophy & Religion

It starts with one: Why? People have been thinking about the fundamental questions of their existence since time immemorial. What is good or reasonable action? What does faith mean in a complex world full of possibilities and full of contradictions? The degree programmes from the Philosophy & Religion thematic cluster therefore extend an invitation to engage in an intensive thinking exchange with the present and tradition. Our graduates are formidable problem solvers and look far beyond the horizon of their own cultural circle.
