Review: ?Fair is foul and foul is fair.“ That may have been the motto of Shakespeare’s witches but not that of the Bamberg University English Drama Group. Even though the play’s title was called “I hate Shakespeare” the audience seemed to disagree strongly and laughed heartily when Juliet visited a dating show to find true love, was riveted when Lady Macbeth seduced her husband to kill the king and flabbergasted when confronted with the theory that Shakespeare was indeed responsible for a supposed rat zombie plague.

The performance held everything it promised: a run-down of the Bard’s most well-known plays in a modern setting and the answer to the question if Shakespearian lines are still en vogue. The answer is of course yes. He is, after all, still the Bard.

Review: In the summer semester 2017, the BUEDG presented another thought-provoking satirical play on global capitalism and corporatism and its effects. The ensemble of six plus director Marie-Theres Schmidt showed their audience impressively that capitalism is all fun and games for the rich until the world goes to pieces.

The play was well received by critics, who continued talking about the play's celebration of criticism of capitalism with cast and crew after every performance.

On the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, it is only natural for any drama group to commemorate him and celebrate his work. The BUEDG has decided to do this by putting on his play The Comedy of Errors, a fast-paced farce which can be considered as a precursor to the modern-day sitcom.

A gentleman from Syracuse and his servant travel to Ephesus, a city rumoured to be home to all kinds of sorcery. Unbeknown to them, it is also residence to their long lost identical twin brothers. To make things even more complicated, each set of twins shares the same name, and even their friends, colleagues and families are incapable of telling them apart. Mistaken identities, mix-ups, and all sorts of confusing situations are the essence of this very early Shakespearean comedy which has delighted and entertained audiences for centuries.

Something is happening in the City. Traffic has not moved in days and the people have taken to the streets. A desperate man burns down his livelihood in the hope of claiming insurance, while his youngest son has lost his mind. Preparations are being made for the biggest party in 2000 years, but the birthday boy is nowhere to be seen.

A darkness has fallen on the City. The people punish themselves on the streets. The experts have read all of the books and the solution remains unclear. A fortune can be made, if you know what to sell. Children are the only salvation and the airports are full.

It's a strange time in the City. The lonely walk the streets. A man passes by the house where he used to live, and finds nothing. Important decisions are to be made and a Russian boy searches in vain for his sister.
People are on the move, but they cannot seem to leave anything behind.

Terry Pratchett's well known novel Wyrd Sisters was adapted for the stage by Stephen Briggs in 1996. The Bamberg University Drama Group staged the play at Chapeau Claque despite the summer heat being suffocating for both actresses and actors as well as the audience.

Review: This year's winter workshop production took the audience into the grim, but slightly absurd reality of WWII England - to Upper Catchpole. Volunteering for the war here is a community thing and all citizens, men and women alike, wish to contribute to the war effort. Most of them, however, had no idea what they were bargaining. Still, German spy Reginal Hurst had no easy time manipulating them, but the audience certainly had an easy time laughing at the antics of the townfolk's attempts at playing war - at times even in long johns.

Despite the freezing temperatures at JUZ, the BUEDG again entertained their audience greatly and the performances were generally enjoyed by the audience.

From July 4 to 9, the Bamberg University English Drama Group presented its new play, Deathship 666, a disaster film parody, directed by Uli Spies, to packed audiences. Come on board of Deathship 666! and witness the titanic rise and fall of the most death-defying ship time and space has ever seen. Get to know the incompetent crew and all of Deathship's naive passengers. Root for the young and attractive Grandma as she tries to sleep with every person on the ship to fulfil her namesake. Bet your money on who will be the first one to blow up Deathship. Be there when icebergs, explosions and thousands of bears attack. And, please, never under any circumstances trust the captain of the ship.

This summer, the BUEDG would like you to meet the Scamore family. Grandma Sycamore and the rest of the bundle are as interesting and loveable as they are peculiar. Each in their own little bubble, they live a happy and light-hearted life until Alice Sycamore, grandma Sycamore's granddaughter, decides to get engaged to the wall street accountant Tony Kirby. When the Kirby family comes to visit the Sycamores unexpectedly, havoc and mayhem are to be expected. But can Alice and Tony's love survive this chaos?

Review: From July 3 to 8, the Bamberg University English Drama Group presented its new play, a comedy thriller by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth, to packed audiences. A group of patients meet at Dr. Conrad Bering's private office. However, the Pulitzer-Prize-winning shrink is dead - and the killer on the loose. Directors Maria Schott and Joachim Zimmer welcomed more than 400 guests to the JuZ, this year's venue. The visitors to the play witnessed a funny group of characters one after the other presenting their skeletons in the closet, ultimately finding out that getting away with murder is not that easy after all...

Under Dirk Müller's direction the Bamberg University English Drama Group staged Baby with the Bathwater by Christopher Durang in the E.T.A.-Hoffmann theatre in July.

Salem and Gomorrah is a free adaptation of Arthur Miller’s classic The Crucible (1952). It focuses on the religious fervour and witch hunts while centring the triangular relationship between Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor and Abigail Williams. Staged in the E.T.A-Hoffmann-Theatre on four days, the play attracted more than 450 people.

The winter workshop in 2009/2010 culminated in a performance of a short play by Caryl Churchill. Hot Fudge – a one-act play about lies, shallowness and showmanship – was staged at U5/02.22.
