UrbanMetaMapping - Research

Maps tell stories not just of geography, but of history, loss and resilience. Among the most revealing are historical damage maps

The project Urban Meta Mapping led by Dr. Carmen M. Enss is a research consortium of scholars from various disciplines and countries who jointly investigate war damage maps of European cities form the Second World War Europe.

Maps reflect how governments, engineers and historians understood cities after the war. They played a key role in interpreting the past and shaping the future of the city. In cooperation with fellow researchers, historians and activists across Europe, the project digitizes and georeferences these maps. We want to build a shared digital archive ensuring that these maps and the history within are not just preserved, but made accessible for generations to come.
