Winter Workshop (February 2024)

In the Wintersemester 2023/2024 we split into two groups and put together three One-Act-Plays, while also focusing on acting exercises and character work. The plays were performed at our winter show under the title Love, Death, Money.

Our first play was Salomé by Oscar Wilde, which tells the story of the young princess of the same name. Pursued by the languorous gazes of the Tetrarch Herod Antipas, the young princess of Judaea is infatuated with the voice of the charismatic prophet Jokanaan, who is held captive in a cistern. To the dismay of the young Syrian captain of the guards, who is hopelessly in love with Salomé, she orders Jokanaan to be brought forth of his prison, and to speak with him. In his heartbreak, the captain takes his own life. Meanwhile Salomé schemes to make the love affair between her and Jokanaan happen, despite the refusal of the former and the displeasure of her mother and the Tetrach. In her pursuit, she sets off a cataclysmic series of events that end in misery and death.

Our second play was the comedy A Dollar by David Pinski. A group of penniless traveling actors stumbles upon a single dollar. While they start to worship “the almighty ruler of the world“, the Villain steals the dollar and immediately uses this newfound power to boss the others around. But the Villain‘s rule does not last for long, as the Comedian declares a revolution and together, the actors take back the dollar - wondering how they might divide it among themselves. As a stranger crosses their path, they inquire his help – but instead they get robbed and are penniless once again.

Last, but certainly not least, we put on another comedy – An Angel Intrudes by Floyd Dell. Jimmy Pendleton and his girlfriend Annabelle want to start a new life South America. Just as they are about to leave, Annabelle gets cold feet. They start to fight, but are suddenly interrupted by Jimmy‘s guardian angel, who seeks change from the monotony of heaven and wants to learn about the human ways. Much to Jimmy’s dismay, Annabelle teaches the Angel the works of human life, which results in them falling in love and the Angel giving up his wings. In the end, they leave together as Jimmy gifts them the flight tickets. The Angel returns a moment later to take his wings, just in case.
