Internal rules of procedure of the Centre for Medieval Studies of the University of Bamberg

(Accepted in the statutory meeting of the Centre on December 17th 1997; passed by the Senate of the University of Bamberg on January 28th 1998; changed by decision of the General Assembly of July 19th 2006; changed September 15th 2011)

 

§1 Institutional anchorage

The Centre for Medieval Studies (ZEMAS) is a common scientific institution of the departments at the University of Bamberg researching the Middle Ages.

 

§2 Tasks

The Centre serves the purpose of interdisciplinary coordination and organisation of Middle Age related activities research, teaching and further education. It simplifies the coordination between all relevant historical institutions in Bamberg and Upper Franconia, as well as with the corresponding departments of neighbouring universities and the national and international research of the Middle Ages.

 

§3 Members

Regular Members:

All professors, private teachers and scholars with a doctoral degree employed at the University of Bamberg can gain membership, as long as they research a medieval subject. Becoming a member is achieved by a written statement which is to be passed to the Direction. In case of doubt the General Assembly decides upon the case.

 

Corresponding Members:

Scholars with a doctoral degree who do not belong to the University of Bamberg may gain membership as Corresponding Members at suggestion of a Regular Member and with the consent of the General Assembly. Corresponding Members are allowed to take part in General Assemblies in advisory capacity. They are in the position to submit an application together with Regular Members and join in the realisation of ZEMAS projects. The membership of a Corresponding Member ends with a notice of resignation by the member. It can also be ended by decision of the General Assembly, which states that a continuance of the Corresponding Membership of the member in question is not any longer of interest for the ZEMAS. Regular Members who change University may on application and with consent of the General Assembly continue their membership as Corresponding Members.

 

Junior Members:

Students of the B.A./M.A. programme “Interdisciplinary Medieval Studies” and other programmes with medieval content, postgraduates with medieval research interests and scholars without a doctoral degree who work at the chairs and professorships attached to the ZEMAS (including project members) may be incorporated as Junior Members at suggestion of a Regular Member and with the consent of the General Assembly. The Junior Members elect a spokesperson, who participates in the General Assembly of the ZEMAS in advisory capacity. Junior Members are allowed to submit an application for promotion of projects together with Regular Members, who are responsible for the orderly realisation and billing of the submitted project. In addition they are permitted to participate in ZEMAS projects. The membership of a Junior Member ends with the acquisition of the Regular Membership, the conclusion of the graduation, by notice of resignation by the member or retirement from the University of Bamberg (removal from the register of students, cessation of employment) It can also be ended by decision of the General Assembly, which states that a continuance of the Junior Membership of the member in question is not any longer of interest for the ZEMAS.

 

§4 General Assembly

The General Assembly elects the Direction and decides on the suggestions concerning the work program it provides. The General Assembly meets on application of the Direction or on application of at least two thirds of the members, at least once per semester.

 

§5 Direction

The direction consists of five university lecturers who are elected for two years, one of them as executive director.

 

§6 Evaluation of the Centre

The Centre is evaluated by at least three external assessors in intervals five years at the most. The assessors are ordered by the Executive Director of the Centre in consultation with the University Directors. Object of evaluation is the work of the Centre and the B.A./M.A. programme “Interdisciplinary Medieval Studies”.
