The Fr?nkischer Tag newspaper has published an extensive article presenting various nature and hiking highlights in the Bamberg area: from the Snake Trail in the Steigerwald Forest to the Literary Hiking Trail and geological features such as the Bing Cave and the Stone Channel.
The Frankenweg trail, which the Chair of Explainable Machine Learning covered during a multi-day hike, is given special attention. The starting point was Sche?litz, the destination Heiligenstadt – a varied section of the route covering around 22 kilometers with significant differences in altitude.
Sebastian Doerrich from the Chair describes the special appeal of the route in the article: Changing landscapes between open viewpoints, shady forest passages, and untouched meadows gave the tour an almost fairy-tale atmosphere. “Some passages reminded us of the Shire from the Lord of the Rings trilogy,” he is quoted as saying. In addition to the scenic diversity, the reliable signage was also impressive. The climbs at the beginning are particularly challenging, which is why it is recommended to take sufficient water with you, especially in summer.
The article ranks the hike among a series of recommended excursions for nature lovers who want to get away from the crowds of tourists. The destinations presented range from moderate walks to challenging day trips and combine nature experiences with cultural and historical discoveries.
