Publications and Open Access Guidelines of the University of Bamberg Press
1. Open Access
With the institutional, science-led Open Access publication service University of Bamberg Press (UBP), the University of Bamberg supports Open Access in the sense of its Open Access Declaration. University of Bamberg Press publishes all books and journals as scientific first publications in Diamond Open Access. This means that no article processing charges (APC), article submission charges (ASC) or book processing charges (BPC) are charged. There are no costs for authors or readers. The Open Access editions of the University of Bamberg Press are permanently published on the Current Research Information System (FIS) of the Otto-Friedrich-University.
On request, a print edition of monographs and collected works can be produced for a fee.
2. Authorship, copyright and licences
a. Copyright
Authors grant the University of Bamberg Press a simple, non-exclusive and permanent right of use without any obligation to use. For electronic publication on the Internet (open access), the University of Bamberg Press is authorised to reproduce and store the work on its own servers and to make it accessible in electronic form via international data networks. It is also authorised to grant the German National Library as well as other state and university libraries and the PKP Preservation Network corresponding rights of use for the purpose of long-term archiving. University of Bamberg Press is also authorised to incorporate the metadata and the works themselves into scientific platforms that serve the visibility of the publication and better scientific reception. If necessary, University of Bamberg Press is authorised to transfer the data into other formats, while maintaining the integrity of the content, if this is required by technical developments.
b. Licence
The work and all contributions contained therein - with the exception of covers, quotations, illustrations and purely AI-generated content - are provided under the Creative Commons CC BY licence in the respective current version. This licence allows third parties to redistribute, modify and combine publications with other works, including commercially, as long as the author of the original is credited. The CC BY licence thus significantly promotes the visibility and reach of publications and enables legally compliant and free reuse, even in combination with other CC-licensed works.
In addition, the authors grant the rights to pass on the publication-related metadata and the summary under the Creative Commons CC0 licence. The authors have thus released the metadata into the public domain by waiving all copyright and related rights worldwide, insofar as this is legally possible. This means that the data can be copied, modified and distributed, even for commercial purposes, without asking for permission. By making the metadata available for unrestricted re-use, the authors support the visibility of their publication.
c. Authorship and copyright
The regulation of authorship for publications at the University of Bamberg Press corresponds to §16 of the "Guidelines for Safeguarding the Requirements of good Research Practice at the Otto-Friedrich-University of Bamberg" (2021). Authorship requires a genuine, comprehensible contribution to the content of a scientific text, data or software publication. This contribution exists in particular if a researcher has contributed to the following in a scientifically relevant manner
1. the development and conception of the research project or
2. the preparation, collection, procurement, provision of data, software, sources or
3. the analysis, evaluation or interpretation of the data, sources and the conclusions drawn from them or the writing of the manuscript.
In addition, UBP agrees with the "Statement of the Executive Committee of the German Research Foundation (DFG) on the influence of generative models for text and image creation on the sciences and the DFG's funding activities" (2023), according to which AI tools do not fulfil the requirements for authorship or authorship, as they cannot assume responsibility for the submitted work. AI tools are neither natural persons nor legal entities and therefore cannot regulate the transfer of rights or licence agreements and cannot identify any potential conflicts of interest. Bamberg University Press agrees with this view and does not accept submissions in which AI tools are listed as authors or co-authors.
3. Use of AI
The use of AI tools for the content of a manuscript must be clearly labelled. It must be transparent which content (e.g. texts, tables, images, data collection and analysis, etc.) was created using which AI tool, how AI tools were used and how the authors have fulfilled their responsibility to clarify legal and ethical aspects. The use of AI tools does not release the authors from full responsibility for the content of the submitted work and the corresponding liability in the event of violations of copyright and related rights, good scientific practice and the ethical principles of publishing.
4. Ethical guidelines
Authors are expected to avoid any scientific misconduct. The "Guidelines for Safeguarding the Requirements of good Research Practice at the Otto-Friedrich-University of Bamberg" (2021) is decisive for this. In addition, editors, authors and reviewers are required to observe the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing (2019) of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
5. Complaints and conflicts
In the event of conflicts, allegations and complaints, the publisher's management is available to provide advice and clarification. Cases of conflict and complaints must be reported in writing to the University Library as the superordinate institution of UBP for documentation purposes:
Fabian Franke, Executive Director of the University Library
Tel: +49 (0)951/863-1500
Otto-Friedrich-Universit?t Bamberg
Universit?tsbibliothek Bamberg / University of Bamberg Press
Postfach 2705, 96018 Bamberg

In addition, the university management can be consulted as an independent body if the publisher or its work itself is criticised. The Vice President for Research and Junior Academics serves as a point of contact. Both the publisher's management and the university management use the COPE flow charts and materials.
6. Dealing with academic misconduct
The ombudsman procedure is governed by the "Statutes of the University of Bamberg on the procedure in the event of suspected academic misconduct" at the University of Bamberg (2021).
7. Conflicts of interest
Authors submitting manuscripts as well as editors and reviewers of University of Bamberg Press are obliged to declare any conflicts of interest that may affect the objectivity and integrity of a publication.
Circumstances in which the impression may arise that undue influence is exerted on the review or publication of a work are to be regarded as conflicts of interest. These can be of a financial, non-financial, professional, contractual or personal nature.
8. Handling of research data
UBP supports the open and transparent handling of research data in accordance with the "Research Data Policy" (2022) of the University of Bamberg. Research data belonging to a publication should be published in a suitable (subject-specific) repository and linked in the publication. Authors of University of Bamberg Press also have the option of publishing research data associated with the text-based publication in the university's FD repo. Research data for articles can be published on the journal platform in direct connection with the article.
9. Quality assurance
All members of the University of Bamberg can publish with the approval of a university institution (institute, chair, centre) in order to ensure compliance with academic standards. All publications appear in series with an editorial review process. A peer review process is used in individual series. This is made transparent in the description of the publication series. In addition, University of Bamberg Press is committed to the "Quality Standards for Open Access Books" (2023) of the AG Universit?tsverlage.
10. Archiving
a. Self-archiving
The authors' copyrights remain intact. By granting the Creative Commons licence CC-BY, certain rights of use are transferred to the general public. Publication in the University Press UBP does not prevent further publication of the documents in journals or monographs or on other servers.
Authors may deposit their work in all versions of the publication process in an institutional or specialised repository as well as on their personal or institutional websites. By self-archiving their publications, authors actively support and promote open access and the dissemination of their research.
With regard to monographs and edited volumes, this includes manuscripts and articles that have been submitted and accepted for publication as well as those that have been published.
With regard to articles in journals, this includes preprints (submitted versions), manuscripts accepted for publication (accepted versions/postprints) and published articles (published version, version of record).
After successful publication, authors should refer from the deposited version to the published work on the Publication Service website using the digital object identifier (DOI) of the original publication.
b. Long-term archiving
In cooperation with the university's IT service, the University Library ensures the necessary data security and data protection for publications of the University of Bamberg Press in the research information system and on the journal platforms. In addition, regular storage and backup routines are carried out. International standards such as the guidelines of the Open Archives Initiative are used for the indexing, storage and archiving of electronic documents and for the exchange of metadata. All publications are forwarded to the archive server of the German National Library and archived there for the long term.
Journals and the articles they contain are also archived long-term via the PKP Preservation Network in LOCKSS.
