Inhalt
Das Seminar besch?ftigt sich mit der Rolle von Bildung im Prozess sozialer Mobilit?t. Hierzu wird zun?chst in die klassischen Begriffe und Konzepte sozialer Mobilit?tsforschung eingeführt. Darauf aufbauend besch?ftigen wir uns damit, wie der Zusammenhang zwischen sozialer Herkunft und sozialer Platzierung durch Bildung vermittelt wird. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt des Seminars wird dann auf der Auseinandersetzung mit theoretischen Ans?tzen und empirischen Studien zur Beziehung zwischen sozialer Herkunft und Bildungserfolg liegen.

It is not necessary to register for the seminar in advance (e.g. via Flexnow, via email, etc.). More information about the course and registration guidelines will only be provided during the first seminar session. Students should be familiar with the contents of the compulsory lecture “Research design” and multiple linear and binary logistic regression analysis. Moreover, students are required to be familiar with any statistics package of their choice (e.g. Stata, SPSS, R, …) to be able to work on their empirical research. These skills could either be acquired or refreshed in self-studies or by attending a relevant course at the methods chair. Language of instruction: English. Module-related examination: Term paper (time: 3 months); written in English.

Replications are an essential part of science as they fulfil several functions: they allow the validation or rejection of previous results, improve precision, help to find errors or weak spots and can extend internal and external validity. In this seminar, participants will replicate a previous study. After a brief introduction of the theoretical foundations of replications, participants will have the choice to pick a study of their interest and work on the replication during the semester. In regular meetings, participants will present their progress, which will be discussed in the plenary sessions. The sessions include a lab session where students are assisted with their statistical analyses. The final grade depends on the term paper (100%).
Note that this course is partially blocked as there is not a session every week. Meeting dates will be provided during the first seminar session.

Inhalt
In the research seminar, students undergo the entire process of quantitative empirical social research from the identification of a research question over the formulation of theoretically deducted hypotheses to empirical analyses. Over a period of two consecutive semesters, students will conduct their own research projects in the field of sociological research on education and the labour market. The empirical analyses will be based on Starting Cohort 6 of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), a large-scale longitudinal survey of the working-age population in Germany. The first part of the seminar (Winter term 2019/20) will be devoted to identifying a relevant research question against the background of the current state of research, deriving theory-guided hypotheses and developing a suitable research design. The second part of the seminar (Summer term 2020) will be devoted to working with the data and transferring the findings of the projects into a scientific research article.

In addition, we will consider how country differences in the setup of educational systems and labour market structures influence the transition from school to work. Das Kolloquium ist die begleitende Veranstaltung für Abschlussarbeiten, die an der Professur für Soziologie mit dem Schwerpunkt Bildung und Arbeit im Lebensverlauf betreut werden. Eine Teilnahme setzt ein bestehendes Betreuungsverh?ltnis voraus. Die Anmeldung erfolgt über die betreuenden Dozenten. Im Kolloquium stellen die Studierenden regelm??ig die Fortschritte ihrer Arbeiten vor, die dann gemeinsam mit den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern des Kolloquiums diskutiert werden.
