On June 24, 2025, the Upper Franconia ESD team held an all-day training course for teachers from all types of schools at the Steigerwaldzentrum in Handthal. Sophia Hochrein and Maurice Kalweit presented the wild bee project of the Department of Science Education in two workshops. The participants were given a practical insight into the project, the identification of solitary bees and wasps based on their nesting structures and possible ways of implementing the project in the classroom.

The combination of digital identification aids, practical demonstrations and ecological research creates learning environments based on research and discovery, which not only strengthen knowledge of species, but can also promote design skills in the sense of education for sustainable development (ESD).

A particular focus was on the presentation of the student research project on wild bee monitoring, in which interested teachers and schools can participate. The aim is to set up a long-term monitoring system that scientifically documents the distribution of wild bee species in Germany and provides educational support.

The positive response and the recognizable interest of the participants show the project's suitability for future educational initiatives in the field of ESD and citizen science.
