Heritage Conservation

The subject area "Denkmalpflege / Heritage Sciences" stands for the comprehensive scholarly examination of cultural heritage. The theory and history of heritage conservation, in particular urban heritage, international heritage cultures, the politics of heritage and the World Heritage concept, are central fields in the research and teaching of the Chair. 

The establishment of the research-focused Centre for Heritage Conservation Studies and Technologies (KDWT) in 2016 has given rise to numerous research projects, many of them externally funded, which are carried out in close cooperation with neighbouring disciplines. Particular emphasis is placed on processes of value ascription and value production in heritage discourses, and the conservation of historic cities and their structures.

The holder of the Chair is responsible for the Master's programme in "Denkmalpflege / Heritage Conservation", which is conducted in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Coburg. International partnerships, currently with the Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies (SCCS) at the University of Edinburgh and the programme in Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, as well as regular guest lectures by scholars from around the world, contribute to the international character of the Master's programme in "Denkmalpflege / Heritage Conservation".
