What is Mind the Mind?
Mind the Mind is a Europe-wide volunteer project run by the European Federation of Psychology Students' Associations (EFPSA). Psychology students who have undergone special training give workshops on mental health in school classes with the aim of raising awareness and destigmatizing the issue.
Further information
Information for schools
Our workshops are intended for students in eighth grade and above from all types of schools (currently excluding special education schools).
The process: You send us an email requesting a workshop and arrange an appointment. Two workshop leaders come to your school for at least 90 minutes or, ideally, three school hours and hold the workshop. To do this, they need a room where it is possible to form a circle of chairs, a projector, and the ability to play audio recordings.
The workshop covers mental health in general, one or two disorders selected by the class for closer examination, how to deal with those affected, and various support services and strategies. The workshop leaders take on a purely informative role, which explicitly does not include diagnosis, therapy, or intervention of any kind.
(We are also happy to implement more comprehensive workshop concepts (e.g., project days) in consultation with you. However, due to the significant additional effort involved, a longer lead time must be taken into account.)
Just send us an email to arrange a workshop.
Information for potential volunteers
Are you studying psychology and also think that mental health is not given enough attention in schools? Then you've come to the right place to change that.
How do I become a workshop leader?
To lead workshops, you must first complete a short training course with other prospective workshop leaders. The course covers workshop structure, strategies for working with students, and tips for dealing with difficult situations. Here you can also ask any questions you may have about running the workshop.
In addition, you should either be currently enrolled in the "Clinical Psychology I" module, have already completed it, and/or participate in one of our psychopathology lectures. Here you will acquire the necessary subject-specific knowledge and can ask any questions you may have about the content.
What are my responsibilities as a workshop leader?
The Mind The Mind Bamberg organization team arranges the workshop dates with the schools and then assigns the individual workshops to the various volunteers in teams of two workshop leaders each. You then contact the school again together with the other person to arrange the details. You will also discuss how to divide the workshop among yourselves and may adapt the presentation we have prepared according to your ideas (not mandatory). Immediately before the workshop, pick up a bag of materials (with flyers, name tags, etc.) from the Huwi student council office (M3N/-01.21) or from another workshop team.
You will hold the workshop, which can be divided into the following three parts:
- General information on mental health
- One or two specific disorders
- Dealing with those affected and offering help and strategies
You will take on a purely informative role, which explicitly does not include diagnosis, therapy, or intervention of any kind.
Of course, you don't know everything. It's perfectly okay not to have an answer to a question sometimes. It's happened to all of us, and we can communicate that to the students. These questions can then be answered afterwards, after doing some research. Don't forget: we're all still students.
After the workshop, go through the feedback from the class, get back in touch with the school or the contact person directly, and reflect on the workshop.
On top:
From time to time, Mind the Mind Bamberg also meets for game nights or intervision meetings, which you are of course very welcome to attend :)
So if you would like to become part of the Mind the Mind project, feel free to send us an email! :)
