Reasons for Studying German Language, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Bamberg

Living Literature

The University’s Facebook page has listed our Poetics Professorship as a reason for studying in Bamberg.

Literature is alive here: for our series ‘Literature at the University’, we have been inviting well-known authors to Bamberg for thirty years. The Poetics Professorship is a nationally renowned institution where representatives of literary production, reception and research come together.

The University of Bamberg’s storied Poetics Professorship began with Eugen Gomringer in 1986 and continued with authors including Clemens Setz in 2016 and Kathrin R?ggla in 2017. Every summer, the Chair of Modern German Literature invites renowned authors from the German-speaking world to our University, where they bring their own approach to literature and art to life during public lectures and a close exchange with our students. This cultural intermezzo is open not only to the students of the Faculty of Humanities but to anyone who enjoys literature.

Varied Course Offering

Our module catalogue covers everything from Baroque poetry to contemporary literature, from the beginnings of the German language in medieval manuscripts to modern chatrooms, from picture book designs to multimedia lesson planning, from curating exhibitions to public relations. And your learning environment won’t be limited to classrooms and libraries. We collaborate closely with a wide range of cultural centres in Germany and abroad, we organise plenty of excursions and make every effort to incorporate practical experiences on location into our curriculum.

Bringing the Middle Ages to life

Projects such as Mittelalter macht Schule (MimaSch), the Medieval Studies theatre group and song evenings bring the Middle Ages back to life.

Top Rankings Thanks to Quality Support

The good subject-specific supervision and support available to students at our university have earned us high marks in university rankings for many years. We provide services aimed at new students, such as our freshers’ days, and tutorials for revising and practising material learned during seminars and lectures.

Studying in a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Our university is situated right in the heart of a beautiful town with a unique culture and a high quality of life. With its large student population, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bamberg offers plenty of activities outside the university, such as literary events, exhibitions, the Bamberg Symphony, theatres, independent cinemas and a lot more.
