Studying Communication Science in Bamberg

Are you interested in media? Do you want to know what decisive significance they have in our everyday life but also for society as a whole? Communication studies researches how our communication and information society is evolving. We provide you with the necessary background knowledge and methodological skills to examine current developments in the media world.

We are an interdisciplinary subject in between humanities and social sciences. In our practical modules, you will gather hands-on experience of journalism and PR, from newspapers to radio and television to social media. As budding media professionals, you are taking your first steps in our up-to date newsroom and multimedia studio.


Structure of the Bachelor's Degree

Our course of study is divided into five modules as a main subject: In the introductory modules, you acquire solid basic knowledge of Germany’s media system, as well as important research methods and theories. In the advanced modules, you are able to focus on topics close to your professional goals, personal interests and talents.

In addition to the individual composition of the modules, you always have to combine Communication Science as a main subject of Communication Studies with a minor subject (30 ECTS points). Depending on your interests, you can choose from a wide range of subjects within the humanities and other faculties.

In addition, you also have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in our Master's programme "Strategische Kommunikation/Kommunikationsanalyse".

Your Qualifications

The Bachelor's degree programme in Communication Science can only be taken up in the winter semester. The formal admission requirement is a general higher education entrance qualification.

In addition, you should have the desire to learn more about the function and significance of media and communication for and in society. An interest in humanities and social science issues and methods is particularly relevant here.

  • not be afraid of empirical research and statistics;
  • have a desire to get a taste of various professional fields in journalism and PR.

Prospective students who have a foreign nationality and a foreign university entrance qualification must apply to the International Office for a Bachelor's degree programme at the University of Bamberg.
