Career Prospects
Outside of academia, a wide range of professional fields are open to geographers. But you’ll be unsuccessful if you’re looking for what the ‘typical’ job is. This is actually one of the biggest advantages of completing studies in Geography. Thanks to a broad knowledge, a very good methodological education and the ability to recognise spatial interrelationships in the context of society and the environment, geographers can ‘think outside the box’ and work in the most varied professional fields. Carefully selected internships in particular can make it easier to start your career. This broad education allows geographers to quickly familiarise themselves with different and complex fields of work. This applies to jobs in companies, but also self-employed work in the following fields:
- Urban and regional planning authorities, economic development
- City and regional management
- Social (spatial) planning and residential area management or development
- Rural development and local partnerships
- Tourism management
- Market research companies
- Insurance
- Institutions with a need for GIS applications and GIS-supported spatial analysis
- Statistical offices
- Engineering and planning offices, in particular site analysis
- Infrastructure planning, in particular in the field of alternative energies
- International organisations (governmental and non-governmental organisations)
- Specialised journalism, publishing and communication
- Adult education, educational institutions
- Heritage conservation, cultural landscape preservation
- Museums, libraries and documentation centres
- Water management and environmental authorities
- Conservation authorities
You can gain advanced skills through one of the two master’s degree programmes offered by the Institute for Geography: MA in Social and Population Geography or MA in Historical Geography. These expand your potential working fields, for example in conflict moderation and mediation, consulting and geospatial consulting and with jobs in the field of press and communication. After consolidating your knowledge with a master’s, it is also possible to work in the field of geographical research. Important current fields of research in geography can be identified with particular reference to landscape changes, cultural landscape preservation and heritage conservation, demographic change, regional conflict research, geographical transition studies, the dynamics of the spatial order of culture and society, and geographic information systems.
