  • We have a wide range of academic specialisations from the Early Middle Ages to the modern period, from materials science and excavation techniques to theoretical reflection on the discipline.
  • If we cannot cover a topic ourselves, we invite temporary lecturers to do so, meaning we can still offer courses on topics like ‘Dark Heritage in Archaeology’, or methods from the natural sciences.

SABA-Orga-Team
Student Working Group for Archaeology is a group of students from archaeological disciplines that promotes academic exchange, student involvement and an enjoyable working atmosphere.
  • SABA is an international conference on archaeology, organised by our students here at the University of Bamberg. It aims to be an international networking tool for students and to promote archaeological research beyond borders.

    • Have an authentic experience living and studying in Bamberg’s Old Town.
    • Enjoy welcoming institute facilities with student workspaces. Archaeological excavations were carried out when the building was renovated. Finds and records are on display in the institute building.
    • The specialist library for Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology is very well equipped. Just like the institute and the seminar rooms, the library is located in the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bamberg.

    Many classes and potential final thesis topics are connected to research projects within Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology.

    • We are conducting research in the field:
      • a Slavic cemetery in Iffelsdorf
      • a castle near Eltman
      • at the modern Ackerbürgerhaus in B?rnau
      • in a village in the Rhenish lignite mining area
    • We carry out archaeological experiments (in B?rnau)
    • We analyse old excavations (e.g. Bamberg Cathedral)
    • We develop thematic syntheses (e.g. ceramic research in Southern Germany)

    Heritage conservation studies, building archaeology, and medieval and post-medieval archaeology are combined at one university and even in one joint institute. Due to being just walking distance away from each other within the centre of Bamberg, close contact to neighbouring disciplines is ensured.
