• We ensure an excellent staff to student ratio. There is always someone you can talk to.
• We have a wide range of academic specialisations from the Early Middle Ages to the modern period, from materials science and excavation techniques to theoretical reflection on the discipline.
• If we cannot cover a topic ourselves, we invite temporary lecturers to do so, meaning we can still offer courses on topics like ‘Dark Heritage in Archaeology’, or methods from the natural sciences.

• The Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology’s student orientation group (Tutorium) is the first point of contact for new students. As well as providing an introduction to academic work and repeating archaeological fundamentals and selected theories, it gives useful advice for successfully beginning your master’s studies.
• The Student Working Group for Archaeology is a group of students from archaeological disciplines that promotes academic exchange, student involvement and an enjoyable working atmosphere.
• SABA is an international conference on archaeology, organised by our students here at the University of Bamberg. It aims to be an international networking tool for students and to promote archaeological research beyond borders.

• The Chair of Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology (AMANZ) is connected to various groups and institutes within the University of Bamberg:
  • KDWT – Centre for Heritage Conservation Studies and Technologies
  • ZEMAS – Centre for Medieval Studies
  • ArchaeoCentrum in B?rnau – experimental archaeology
  • Institute for Franconian Regional History in Thurnau
• We also have diverse links to various official departments in the heritage conservation sector in Bavaria and beyond.

• Have an authentic experience living and studying in Bamberg’s Old Town.
• Enjoy welcoming institute facilities with student workspaces. Archaeological excavations were carried out when the building was renovated. Finds and records are on display in the institute building.
• The specialist library for Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology is very well equipped. Just like the institute and the seminar rooms, the library is located in the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bamberg.

Many classes and potential final thesis topics are connected to research projects within Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology.

• We carry out archaeological experiments (in B?rnau)
• We analyse old excavations (e.g. Bamberg Cathedral)
• We develop thematic syntheses (e.g. ceramic research in Southern Germany)

• We study the interaction between archaeology and the public (e.g. with the blogs Archaelogik and ArchaeoLogue)

Heritage conservation studies, building archaeology, and medieval and post-medieval archaeology are combined at one university and even in one joint institute. Due to being just walking distance away from each other within the centre of Bamberg, close contact to neighbouring disciplines is ensured.
