On excursions, you will get to know new regions. You will visit excavations, archaeological sites, and museums, among other places, where you can make new contacts. Through intensive engagement with the excursion destination, you will gain an overview of the data that archaeologists use to study life and long-term developments in a region.

You can gain practical excavation experience by participating in our research projects – for example, on excavations at Rauher Kulm or in Iffelsdorf. Also consider smaller projects, which often offer opportunities for hands-on involvement. Learn more about our research projects!

The public dissemination of scientific findings and methods at AMANZ is an important aspect of professional qualification. Participation in events organized by the Archaeological Academy enables students to acquire scientific communication skills.

As a scientist, you need to know the sources used to reconstruct the past. Our practical exercises will give you important insights! Seemingly inconspicuous shards can reveal a great deal, but we must classify and document them correctly.

Programme abstract

Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology (known by the German acronym AMaNz) explores the past on the basis of material legacies, but also in conjunction with written and visual sources. The typical subjects of this discipline are castles, monasteries and churches, but can also include cities and villages as well as all aspects of everyday culture. More recently, approaches influenced by cultural studies and the examination of the recent past have gained in significance.
Medieval and post-medieval archaeology has an important role to play in the practical side of (archaeological) heritage conservation in Germany. This programme opens up career opportunities in state and municipal institutes and authorities, in museums, and also in the private sector (excavation companies, cultural promotion). The Bamberg master’s degree programme in Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology provides you with the knowledge you need to start your professional career. Equally, it enables you to pursue doctoral studies and a further career in academia and cultural institutions.
